Purpose

The purpose of this notice is to inform potential applicants to the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN), about a special interest in applications focusing on COVID-19 animal diagnostics.

Background

This notice invites Vet-LIRN Network Laboratories to submit grant applications for Projects or Equipment, specifically related to work focusing on COVID-19 diagnostics in animals. Applications can be one year or multiple years. The maximum project period is four (4) years for COVID-19 applications.

Research Objectives

Examples of approaches that are encouraged include, but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Building testing and sequencing capacity
  • Serological testing to detect past infections in animals
  • Investigating performance of various diagnostic kits
  • New detection methods, such as to detect multiple respiratory viruses in a single test
  • Developing testing methods for different matrices

Important note: examples of approaches that are not eligible for applications under this notice include:

  • Basic research on COVID-19 disease processes
  • Epidemiological or transmission studies of SARS-CoV-2
  • Proposals not related to diagnostics

Application and Submission Information

This notice applies to application due dates on July 12, 2021, July 11, 2022 and July 10, 2023, as well as any new subsequent receipt dates posted in 2024 under any reissues of this announcement through the expiration date of this notice.

  • PAR-18-604: Vet-LIRN Network Capacity-Building Projects

All instructions in the SF424 (R&R) Application Guide and the funding opportunity announcement used for submission must be followed, with the following additions:

  • Applications must include ‘COVID-19’ in Field 11. Descriptive Title of Applicant’s Project on the SF 424 (R&R) Cover Form

Applications nonresponsive to the terms of this NOSI will be withdrawn from consideration for this initiative.
