Section I. Funding Opportunity Description

Interests of Participating NIH Institutes and Centers

National Eye Institute

The mission of the National Eye Institute (www.nei.nih.gov) is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research.   NEI is interested in applications with a research focus on visual disorders that occur more frequently in the LMIC or are of a high public health burden; research addressing health disparities in vision; and research to achieve national or regional goals in vision health such as those articulated by the World Health Organization working with local communities to establish the best means of delivering preventive vision care. Examples include but are not limited to blindness and vision impairment due to infection, cornea scarring, refractive errors, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Further, NEI invites applications that address research topics relevant to mechanisms of visual function, prevention and treatment of eye diseases, and strategies to expand opportunities for people who are blind or have low vision.  Examples of interventions include (but are not limited to) community interventions such as workplace or school-based vision health education, outreach, and promotion programs; and/or may involve use of digital health technologies such as imaging-based artificial intelligence (AI) decision support systems, teleophthalmology, tele optometry, and other mobile health tools or technologies that aid in the screening, early detection, prevention, diagnosis, assessment, management of eye diseases and vision disorders.

NEI will accept applications for funding that are responsive to programmatic priority areas for research within vision and ophthalmology as detailed in the (NEI Strategic Plan: Vision for the Future (PDF 22.5 MB).
