Part 2. Section I Funding Opportunity Description

The National Eye Institute (NEI) supports basic, translational, and clinical research on vision and diseases of the visual system. The mission of the NEI is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research. Applications considered for funding by the NEI must fall within at least one of the areas of emphasis detailed in the NEI Strategic Plan. The goal of NEI’s participation in this funding opportunity is to encourage institutions to provide research training opportunities to clinician residents from Ophthalmology, Optometry, DVM, or other medical fields (with MD or equivalent degrees) who intend to pursue careers as clinician-scientists committed to research related to the mission of NEI.

Part 2. Section II Award Information

Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards

The number of awards is contingent upon NIH appropriations and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.

NEI intends to commit total costs of $1,000,000 to support up to three new awards in fiscal year 2024.
