Release Date: July 27, 2006

National Eye Institute (NEI), (http://www.nei.nih.gov)

Description

The purpose of this Notice is to alert the vision research community that the NEI is changing the process of applying for clinical study planning grant support. The Program Announcement NEI Clinical Study Planning Grant Program (R34) (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-05-115.html) is no longer active. NEI is still interested in supporting this type of research. Therefore, investigators are strongly encouraged to use the NIH R34 mechanism for activities central to the refinement of a clinical study protocol and procedures and the development of a detailed Manual of Operations (MOP). All R34 applications must now be submitted electronically to Grants.gov (http://www.grants.gov) using the SF424 Research and Related (R&R) forms and SF424 (R&R) Application Guide associated with the parent NIH Clinical Trial Planning Grant Program (R34) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-363.html).

Special Features of NEI Support for Planning Grants

The NEI will accept investigator-initiated R34 applications to plan large-scale clinical vision research projects, randomized clinical trials, and epidemiologic studies in all program areas supported by the Institute. The NEI Planning Grant may be used to support not only the development of an MOP but also preliminary studies to refine procedures and/or develop recruitment potential. The NEI permits applicants to request direct costs up to $150,000 per year for up to two years of support. (See http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/contacts/PA-06-363_contacts.htm)

All other details must follow those specified in the parent NIH R34 FOA.
