This notice provides guidance on the NIBIB policies for the K-series
grant mechanisms. A primary objective of the NIBIB interdisciplinary
training program is to support the career development of clinicians and
basic scientists in biomedical imaging and bioengineering. The NIBIB
supports a broad spectrum of K awards. In doing so, our goal is to
promote career development of scientists and clinician-scientists
within the areas of the NIBIB mission by providing opportunities for
additional mentored or independent research programs. An additional
objective is to attract individuals trained in the quantitative
sciences into research careers focusing on questions relevant to
biomedical science and health (K25).

The mission of the NIBIB is to improve health by supporting and
conducting interdisciplinary research and training in biomedical
imaging and bioengineering. This is achieved through supporting the
development and translation of emerging technologies that enable
fundamental biomedical discoveries and facilitate early disease
detection and management. More specifically, the NIBIB plans, conducts
and supports an integrated and coordinated program of research and
research training that can be applied to an individual or to a broad
spectrum of biological processes, disorders, and diseases and across
organ systems. The research promoted and supported by the NIBIB is
strongly synergistic with the other NIH Institutes and Centers as well
as across government agencies, and has the potential for direct
positive medical application. Ultimately, the NIBIB seeks to translate
research findings from the laboratory into practical solutions that
will benefit the public health.

The NIBIB currently accepts applications for the following K awards:
K01, K02, K08, K23, K24 and K25. See our website for the full program
announcements and individual notices for these mechanisms:

Allowable Costs:

Salary Support: Salary limits on career awards in the K series are not
uniform throughout the NIH and are determined independently by each
component of the NIH. Currently, the NIBIB allows a maximum requested
salary of $90,000 for K01, K02 and K25 applications. A maximum
requested salary of $105,000 is allowable for K08 and K23 applications.
For the K24, the NIBIB allows a salary request up to the legislative
maximum
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not-od-03-034.html).

Research Development Support: The NIBIB will also allow a request of
up to $40,000 for research-related costs for K01, K08, K23, K24 and K25
applications. See the individual program announcements for specifics
on permissible costs under this category.
(http://www.nibib.nih.gov/training/students.htm). For the K02
(Independent Scientist Award), it is expected that candidates applying
would have other, independent, peer-reviewed research support at the
time of award (see program announcement for full details,
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-020.html).
Therefore, no additional research costs will be allowed except under
special circumstances.
