The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of
Health NIH) have identified bioengineering and bioinformatics as
essential multi-disciplinary research areas for the 21st century. The
agencies are collaborating on an important high-profile effort to meet
the anticipated bioengineering and bioinformatics human resource needs.
As described in NSF Program Solicitation NSF-02-019, the NSF and NIH
will make joint awards to develop and conduct ten-week "Summer
Institutes" aimed at providing upper-level undergraduate and lower-
level graduate students majoring in the biological, computational,
engineering, mathematics, or physical sciences with well-planned,
inter-disciplinary bioengineering or bioinformatics research and
education experiences. The objective of this effort is to increase the
number of young people considering careers in bioengineering and
bioinformatics at the graduate level and beyond. For the purpose of
this Program Solicitation, bioengineering and bioinformatics are
considered in the broadest sense - the application of engineering,
physical or computational sciences to address biomedical problems.
Innovative applications are welcome in all related areas.
