National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
The purpose of this Notice is to provide additional guidance for applicants submitting K08 and K23 applications to National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) on or after the January 25, 2025 due date. The original release of this policy was on July 13, 2005.
In 2005, the Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases (KUH) permitted urologic surgeon scientists to request a minimum of 6 CM effort (50%). This permission is now extended to all surgeon-scientists in sub-specialties recognized by the American College of Surgeons, as well as transplant surgeons. This applies to all three programmatic Divisions at NIDDK (Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases (DEM), Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition (DDN), and Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases (KUH)). Applicants must include a strong justification for the reduced effort level in the application. Current K08 and K23 awardees in the clinical disciplines described above, who did not originally request a reduced level of effort within their competing application, may request a reduction in effort at the time of their Research Performance and Progress Report (RPPR) for consideration by NIDDK staff, regardless of whether they have acquired subsequent NIH research grant award support.
NIDDK will adjust the total salary support committed to the K award consistent with the adjusted level of effort.
