The purpose of the NIDDK’s Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (DDEMD) Administrative Supplement Program is to enable additional clinical perspectives to be brought to on-going research projects within the Division's mission and to enhance the research expertise of selected physicians.The program will provide supplementary funds to support advanced research opportunities for exceptional emerging physician-scientists (hereafter, "candidates") holding the MD or equivalent or MD/PhD degrees, and who are early in their research careers.

The supplement is intended to allow candidates to expand their research experience to help them transition beyond their clinical training to the next stage of their research careers as physician-scientists.

Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of a currently funded basic and/or clinical DDEMD research project. All applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss potential requests with the NIDDK DDEMD program director of the award for which they wish to submit a supplement application. Applicants must describe:

  • The commitment of the Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) and other faculty (if applicable) to provide appropriate guidance and supervision of the candidate’s research experience
  • The candidate’s qualifications
  • How the candidate's involvement in the research project will advance the project and contribute to his/her research expertise

Who is Eligible to Apply?

Only PD/PIs of an active R01, U01, U54, R18, RC2, DP1 or P01 award from NIDDK's DDEMD are eligible to apply if they have at least one year of support remaining in the current project period as of July 1, 2022 for FY 2022 funding consideration or July 1, 2023 for FY 2023 funding consideration. It is preferrable that a supplement request is for two years to maximize the research exposure. However, well justified supplement requests of less than two years duration will be considered for funding on a case by case basis. PD/PIs must have an identified candidate who is eligible and meets the criteria described below at the time of application. Only one supplement application will be accepted from each DDEMD-funded PD/PI, even if they hold multiple qualifying awards.

Eligible Candidates

Each candidate must:

(1) Hold an MD or equivalent or an MD/PhD degree

(2) Be able to bring a relevant clinical perspective to the research project by being board-eligible or board-certified in the United States (US citizenship or permanent residency is not required, but candidates must have legal verification that allows them to work in the US)

(3) Have no more than four years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application

(4) Have no current or prior independent career development support from either federal or non-federal funds

(5) Never been a PD/PI of a substantial NIH independent research award (R01, R21, etc., or equivalent)

(6) Be able to devote adequate time to the proposed research experience to make a substantial contribution to the project and to build their research expertise (e.g. typically six to nine person-months, equivalent to 50-75% professional effort), and

(7) Not currently be supported by the parent project with committed effort greater than one person-month. Candidates may have had prior fellowship support (e.g., F30, F32).

NIDDK’s Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (DDEMD) is committed to increasing diversity in the biomedical workforce. Thus, candidates from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the NSF to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis and the report Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering are strongly encouraged to apply. Research Strategy (Research Experience Plan)

Describe the plan for the candidate’s research under the supplement that is within the scope of the funded parent DDEMD research project. Identify which research-related experiences will be new to the candidate and how these experiences will build their research expertise and foster their ability to contribute to the research project and future research in diabetes, endocrinology and/or metabolic diseases as a physician-scientist. Indicate the goals that will be achieved during the 2-year timeframe of the supplement. They may include experience in new methodologies, publications, acquiring specific preliminary data or recruitment and/or testing of study participants and plans for applying for independent research funding.

PD/PI Statement

Qualifications and track record of the PD/PI of the parent grant in mentoring MD (or equivalent degree) individuals and the specific plan for interactions and dedicated support of the MD supplement candidate during the research experience.

Candidate Statement

A statement from the supplement candidate describing prior research experience(s) and accomplishment(s), short- and long-term research objectives, and how the additional research experience will contribute to these goals.

Applicant Eligibility Statement

A signed statement from the PD/PI and an institutional official establishing (1) the eligibility of the candidate for support under this program (see eligibility criteria above). If applicable, a description of how the appointment of this specific candidate will address the issue of diversity within the national scientific workforce (i.e., what underrepresented group the candidate falls into). The strength of this statement will be considered by the NIH administrative review committee along with all other material provided, and (2) the candidate's prior and current research support and years of research training/experience.

Letter from Another Institution where Research will be Conducted (if applicable)

If any of the research is to be conducted at a site other than the grantee institution, submit a letter of support from the institution where the research is to be conducted signed by the PD/PI and the appropriate Authorized Signing Official.

Award Budget

The NIDDK will provide support for the candidate’s annual salary, in accordance with the salary structure of the grantee institution, and consistent with the level of effort, up to $100,000 per year plus allowable fringe benefits. The supplement budget may include up to $25,000 per year for additional research-related costs such as assays, reagents and core services as well as the costs for travel of the MD candidate to a scientific conference, if justified. The preferred duration for the supplement request is two years. However, requests of at least one year will be considered. The parent award must have at least the same amount of time remaining on the application submission deadline used.

Application Due Date(s)

Applications must be received by 5 pm local time of the submitting institution on the following:

Thursday, February 3, 2022 for awards in June to August 2022, and Friday, February 3, 2023 for awards in June to August 2023.

Applicants are encouraged to apply early to allow adequate time to make any corrections by the due date to errors found in the application during the submission process.

For funding consideration, applicants must include "NOT-DK-21-022" (without quotation marks) in the Agency Routing Identifier field (box 4B) of the SF424 R&R form. Applications without this information in box 4B will not be considered for this initiative.
