National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

The purpose of this Notice is two-fold: 1) announcement of a new policy
on receipt dates for NIDDK program project (P01) grant applications,
and 2) restatement of the NIDDK strategies for the acceptance and
funding of competing P01 and other investigator-initiated applications
with budgets over $500,000 direct costs in any one year.

1) Receipt Dates: Effective immediately, both new competing (Type 1)
and competing continuation (Type 2) P01 grant applications will be
restricted to two receipt dates per year: June 1 and October 1.
Amended P01 applications will continue to be accepted three times per
year: on February 1 as well as on the June 1 and October 1 dates.

2) Funding Strategies: It is NIDDK policy to impose more stringent
percentile rank cutoffs on P01s and other investigator-initiated
applications with $500,000 or more in projected direct costs in any one
year than on research project grant applications with budgets below
this level. Investigators preparing applications of this size are
advised that they must contact NIDDK program staff to discuss the
program relevance of the proposed work before submitting the
application. Additional information on NIDDK’s funding strategies for
