Specific Areas of Research Interest for NIDCR:

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) supports multidisciplinary research projects that examine the roles of SBHCs in advancing oral health equities among school-aged children and adolescents in the United States. NIDCR is primarily interested in SBHCs that provide comprehensive oral health services including diagnostic, preventive, and treatment services with or without specialty care coordination services.

The NIDCR’s areas of research interest include but are not limited to:

  • Examine the performance of oral health SBHC programs by structural and operational variables such as oral health care delivery and staffing models, types of oral health services offered, use of telehealth, enrollment policies and strategies, and financing mechanisms in oral health care utilization among underserved youth.
  • Assess social and structural determinants of health that affect access to and outcomes of comprehensive oral health SBHC services.
  • Examine innovative health service models, clinical technologies, or novel disease prevention or management strategies that enhance the quality, equity, and cost-effectiveness of comprehensive oral health SBHC services.
  • Examine aspects of SBHC health care delivery systems (e.g. co-location or integration of oral and overall health services, types of services offered, staffing models, use of electronic health records [EHRs]) that can lead to improvements in oral health and overall health outcomes for underserved youth.
  • Examine how SBHCs are functioning as a system of care to coordinate prevention and management of oral and overall health risks in underserved youth.

All other aspects of the FOA remain the same.
