Issued by

National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR)

Purpose

The volume, dimension, and complexity of biomedical and behavioral research data are expanding rapidly, requiring bioinformatic, computational, and data science approaches to manage and analyze the data, address new questions, and obtain deeper insight from the data. This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) calls for research and research training projects that focus on dental, oral, and craniofacial biology and diseases using bioinformatic, computational, and data science approaches.

Specific Areas of Research Interest

Projects may address, but are not limited to the following themes:

  • Development of ontological systems, knowledge representation approaches, and other tools and approaches to facilitate findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability (FAIR) of information from diverse sources relevant to NIDCR’s mission of improving dental, oral, and craniofacial health;
  • Integration and analysis of available molecular, omic, genetic, phenotypic, behavioral, environmental, and socioeconomic data, and electronic health records, to identify novel association of genetic variants with dental, oral, or craniofacial diseases, traits or health disparities, or to reconstruct signaling and regulatory pathways underlying dental, oral, and craniofacial development and abnormalities;
  • Development of bioinformatic and computational methods and approaches, including machine learning (ML)/artificial intelligence (AI), to aid in validation and further refinement of dental, oral and craniofacial disease mechanisms, thereby improving research rigor and reproducibility;
  • Development of robust bioinformatic and computational methods, including ML/AI methods, for prognoses and diagnoses of diseases with dental, oral, or craniofacial abnormalities;
  • Development of novel and robust data analysis algorithms to tackle causal mechanisms of action for onset and progression of disease for identified candidate causal genetic variants, or biological sex as a scientific variable;
  • ML/AI based optimization of clinical procedures for precision dental care; and
  • Computational modeling for treatment planning and assessment of treatment outcomes.
