Purpose

The purpose of this Guide Notice is to notify the public that NIDA has increased salary limits for K01, K25, and K99 Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs).

Background
In May 2024, NIH re-issued the parent K01, K25, and K99 NOFOs. For these re-issued NOFOs, NIDA increased the salary support up to $100,000, making these limits equivalent with the current K08 and K23 announcements. This change is reflected in the NIDA entry of the Table of IC-Specific Information, Requirements for each corresponding NOFO.

Implementation
Effective with new (Type 1) K01, K25, and K99 applications due on June 12, 2024, and subsequently, several NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) will increase the contribution toward the K awardee's salary support for the requested effort (e.g., nine  person months, equivalent to 75% full-time professional effort devoted to research and career development) to a base level of $100,000.

All NIDA K01s, K25s,  and K99s awarded in Fiscal Year 2025, both competing and non-competing, will be calculated using these new figures, and the remaining future years will be adjusted accordingly. In order to ensure accurate awards, applications need to provide the PI's current base salary and level of approved effort. For non-competing Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs), this information can be provided in Section H.1, Budget Form.

The NIH salary contribution toward the K awardee's salary is intended to offset only that portion of the salary that is devoted to research and career development. In  some cases, the awardee’s salary may be such that the calculated NIH salary contribution for the requested effort is less than or exceeds $100,000. The following examples are provided to clarify how the increased salary contribution of up to $100,000 for 75% effort may be calculated dependent on the awardee’s salary:

Scenario 1:

  • Institutional base salary = $125,000
  • $125,000 x 75% = $93,750
  • NIH contribution = $93,750

Scenario 2:

  • Institutional base salary = $155,000
  • $155,000 x 75% = $116,250
  • NIH contribution = $100,000

Applicants and awardees are encouraged to consult each NOFO and contact appropriate IC staff contact to determine the salary and research support cost levels for their applications or awards. If you have questions, contact the Grants Management Specialist (GMS) listed in the contacts for your award.
