Purpose

This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is to encourage applications to support the development of a scientific workforce engaged in research to develop treatments for substance use disorders and the associated medical consequences by providing support for research training and career development for talented investigators interested in addiction science. Funding opportunities are available for scientists at early career stages including graduate student, postdoctoral, early career, and midcareer-level investigators.

Background

There is an urgent and critical need for a substantial increase in the number of scientists pursuing research in addiction medicine. Supporting creative individuals from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines who bring enthusiasm and dedication to thisenterprise will ensure continuous and sustained progresstowards developing effective treatments for substance use disorder and its associated medical consequences, while also bolstering the addiction medicine research workforce by paving the way for scientists to build a successful career in this area of critical importance to the nation.

Research Objectives

This NOSI announces that the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Division of Therapeutics and Medical Consequences (DTMC) intends to bolster the addiction medicine research workforce by providing individuals aspiring to initiate and/or advance a career in research focusing on treatment development, pharmacotherapy, and/or studying the medical consequences related to substance use/substance use disorder with training opportunities, resources, and mentorship. Specifically, research training and career development applications are encouraged in the areas of drug discovery and development, preclinical and clinical trials of medications and immunotherapies, therapeutic devices, digital eHealth development, and behavioral therapies.

The Research Training and Career Development awards in the following research topics include but are not limited to:

  1. Drug discovery and translational research for the treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) stemming from tobacco, cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, or prescription opiate misuse;
  2. Preclinical Addition Treatment Discovery Program with the goal of identifying potential medications to treat drug dependence disorders;
  3. Phase I clinical trials or Phase II clinical trials for novel treatments of substance use disorder;
  4. Development of digital eHealth applications, devices, and monitoring units to pursue translational or clinical studies for treatment adherence or devices to treat substance use disorders;
  5. Development of behavioral therapies for substance use disorders;
  6. Research on medical consequences of substance use such as co-occurring infections including HIV, HCV, and others in humans (special studies in women, minorities, children/adolescents and underserved populations are encouraged).

Application and Submission Information

This Notice applies to due dates on or after June 12, 2020 and expires on September 8, 2023.
