Notice Number: NOT-DA-04-008

Key Dates
Release Date: October 08, 2004

Issued by
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), (http://www.nida.nih.gov)

Purpose

In order to assist NIDA research center grant applicants prepare their applications, the following suggestions are provided. These apply to all unsolicited center application mechanisms, i.e., P60, P50, P30, described in the NIDA Research Center Consolidated Program and Review Guidelines, October 2003 http://www.nida.nih.gov/Funding/GrantGuidelines_03.html and are intended to reduce redundancy and facilitate review.

Some applicants find that placing the following information after the Table of Contents section clarifies the centerness of their proposal by showing the integration of research tasks and staff:

  1. A summary listing of tables and figures with their page numbers. By consolidating this information, the overall aims will be clearer.
  2. A summary overall budget and the individual budgets for cores / projects. All budget information can therefore be provided in this section only.
  3. One set of Biographic Sketches, including research support, for all participating members of the center, showing which core(s) / project(s) each person is affiliated with; this consolidation of information will clarify staff roles and there need not be any Biographical Sketch section in the core or project sections.
  4. A summary table showing the percent effort contributed by each member to the center overall and the distribution of effort across cores and / or projects.
  5. One statement describing resources and environment common across cores / projects, describing in each core / project resources specific to that component only.
  6. An integrated schedule (weekly, monthly, annual) showing the various meetings, workshops, advisory board meetings and conferences, to demonstrate how the center is managing its complex, synergistic activities. Also, some applicants find that separating all appendix materials by core / project and labeling them accordingly better ensures that the appendix materials are linked to their appropriate cores and projects.
