Purpose, IC-Specific Application and Submission Information

NCI-specific information to reflect NCI's participation in this funding opportunity announcement.

This paragraph is to be added after NINDS’ Research Interests and before the section entitled Eligible FOAs

NCI encourages research to identify the unique needs of bi/bi+ populations across the cancer control continuum, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end of life care. Areas of programmatic interest include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating methods for effectively identifying, recruiting, and retaining bi/bi+ individuals in all types of research studies;
  • Examining the relative risk of cancer risk factors (e.g., smoking, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, poor diet quality, sedentary behavior, obesity, aging, nulliparity, and infections such as HPV or HIV) and underlying mechanisms of risk (social, behavioral, biological, clinical, and developmental) in bi/bi+ populations in comparison to monosexual individuals;
  • Assessing differential cancer risk by cancer site to inform risk reduction interventions, screening, or other decision-making options for early cancer detection;
  • Assessing the impact of stigma, discrimination, victimization, behavioral health, and other risk factors on utilization of cancer preventive, screening, and care services;
  • Investigating cancer care needs, delivery, utilization, quality of care, and patient health outcomes including quality of life and well-being among bi/bi+ populations;
  • Investigating barriers to cancer healthcare information and treatment, including lack of access to and utilization of cancer healthcare services, that may lead bi/bi+ populations to avoid or delay seeking health care;
  • Examining provider understanding of and communication with bi/bi+ patients and cancer survivors including intervention development to improve the quality of health information shared with bi/bi+ patients and survivors, and interventions to improve shared decision-making;
  • Examining the intersection of contextual factors (e.g., race, geography, socioeconomic status, and social determinants of health) on cancer health outcomes;
  • Investigating positive and/or protective factors (e.g., family and/or social support) in cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship;
  • Exploring the effects of policy and legislative efforts that restrict sexual and gender minority health care in general on the health and well-being of bi/bi+ populations specifically;
  • Developing effective interventions across the cancer control continuum, through the adaptation of existing interventions or creation of novel interventions specific to bi/bi+ populations, targeting individual, family, community, provider, health system, and policy levels, to improve cancer health outcomes.
