PAR-20-164 - Mechanisms and Consequences of Sleep Disparities in the U.S. (R01 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Issued by

National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform potential applicants that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is amending (augmenting) its specific areas of research interest, effective immediately, in its participation in PAR-20-164, "Mechanisms and Consequences of Sleep Disparities in the U.S. (R01 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)."

The following sections of PAR-20-164 have been amended to reflect NCI's updated participation in this funding opportunity announcement (FOA).

I. In Part 2. Section I. Funding Opportunity Description - Near the end of this section under the subheading Specific Areas of Research Interest, the specifications regarding the specific areas of research interest for the NCI are being modified (in italics):

Currently reads

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is particularly interested in:

NCI is interested in understanding the mechanisms underlying how sleep deficiency or sleep disruption among minority and health disparity cancer populations may contribute to the cancer therapeutic outcomes such as progress free survival or overall survival through effect on therapeutic efficacy, side-effect, and quality of life.

Modified to Read

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is particularly interested in:

  • Understanding the mechanisms underlying how sleep deficiency or sleep disruption among minority and health disparity cancer populations may contribute to the cancer therapeutic outcomes such as progression-free survival or overall survival through effects on therapeutic efficacy, side effects, and quality of life.
  • Understanding the relationships between sleep (e.g., sleep patterns, sleep health, sleep deficiencies) and cancer risk and/or outcomes in understudied/vulnerable populations.
  • Investigating the associations between sleep health, sleep patterns, and/or and sleep deficiencies and observed disparities in cancer risk and outcomes.
  • Exploring how disruptions in sleep schedules during cancer treatment may contribute to disparities in treatment adherence, efficacy, and outcomes.
  • Examining the influence of policies (e.g., time change, time zone, school start, restaurant/bar closures, start/end time for public transit, etc.) and/or organizational-level behaviors on sleep deficiencies and disparities; and how these changes may influence cancer risk/incidence.
  • Identify biological, cellular, and/or systemic mechanisms by which sleep/circadian disruption may influence the cancer development, progression, metastasis, or recurrence among populations that experience health disparities.
  • Investigating the contribution of genetic, epigenetic, and/or other biological risk factors to sleep deficiencies and sleep disparities in cancer survivors.

II. In Part 2. Section VII. Agency Contacts - Under Scientific/Research Contact(s), the following modifications (in italics) in Contact Person for NCI are made:
