Purpose
The purpose of this Notice is to announce the NCI's intention to re-issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) PAR-15-021 to invite U01 cooperative agreement applications for Physical Science-Oncology Projects (PS-OP). The goal of the Physical Sciences-Oncology Network (PS-ON) is to foster the convergence of physical sciences approaches and perspectives with cancer research to advance our understanding of cancer biology and oncology by forming transdisciplinary teams of physical scientists and cancer biologists/physician scientists. Examples of physical scientists may include engineers, physicists, mathematicians, chemists, and computer scientists. The PS-OPs, individually and as a collaborative Network along with other PS-OPs and the Physical Sciences-Oncology Centers (PS-OC), will support transdisciplinary research that: (1) establishes a physical sciences perspective within the cancer research community; (2) facilitates team science and field convergence at the intersection of physical sciences and cancer research; and (3) collectively tests physical sciences-based experimental and theoretical concepts of cancer and promotes innovative solutions to address outstanding questions in cancer research.
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.
The FOA is expected to be published in November/December 2018 with expected application due date in January/February 2019.
The FOA will utilize the U01 (Research Project-Cooperative Agreements) activity code to support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by a small team of investigators with combined expertise in the physical sciences (e.g., engineers, physicists, mathematicians, chemists, computer scientists) and cancer research (e.g., cancer biology, oncology, pathology).
Research Initiative Details
The aim of the PS-ON is to integrate physical sciences and cancer research perspectives and approaches to address complex and challenging questions in cancer research. This FOA re-issuance for PS-OPs will invite a broad range of research that addresses important cancer questions from a physical sciences perspective. Applicants may focus on one of the suggested thematic areas of the physical dynamics of cancer or spatio-temporal organization and information transfer in cancer. Other physical sciences-based thematic areas are also welcome, such as investigating the role of evolutionary theory in cancer or de-convoluting the complexity of cancer, or integrating multiple thematic areas into a discrete, specified, circumscribed collaborative research project.
