Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to clarify the programmatic priorities for RFA-CA-14-009 "Using Social Media to Understand and Address Substance Use and Addiction (R21)” with regard to the use or abuse of multiple substances.

Specifically, the following corrections are made.

1) The text in Part 2. Section I under the heading Background, subheading CRAN Initiative is appended with the text below.

Appended text:

The programmatic priority of CRAN is on research focusing on the use or abuse of multiple substances, including polysubstance use.

2) The text in Part 2. Section I under the heading Research Objectives, subheading Emphasis on Polysubstance Use or Abuse is replaced with a new text as shown below.

Current text reads:

For both scientific areas, projects may be focused on single substance or polysubstance use or abuse. The latter, however, are particularly strongly encouraged and may receive programmatic priority.

Replacement text should read:

For both scientific areas, projects may be focused on single substance or multiple substances, including polysubstance use or abuse. The latter, however, are strongly encouraged and will receive programmatic priority. Projects focused on a single substance are allowed but their results should be applicable to other substances of abuse.

3) The text in Part 2. Section IV.2, PHS 398 Research Plan, Research Strategy under the subheading Background and Significance is appended as shown below.

Modified text (last sentence added):

Background and Significance
Outline the context of the proposed projects and indicate how it will advance the chosen area of research compared to the current state of the field. Applicants are strongly encouraged to propose projects focused on polysubstance use or abuse. Consistent with the overall goals of the CRAN initiative, such projects may receive programmatic priority over projects focused on single substance.

Projects focused on a single substance must indicate how the results would be applicable to other substances of abuse.

All other aspects of the FOA remain unchanged.
