Notice of Intent to Publish a Request for Applications for Research Training Grants in Developing Research Capacity for HIV-Associated Malignancies in Africa

Notice Number: NOT-CA-09-021

Key Dates
Release Date: April 10, 2009

Issued by
National Cancer Institute (NCI) (http://www.cancer.gov/)

PURPOSE OF THE NOTICE:

The National Cancer Institute’s Cancer ADS Malignancy Program, in collaboration with the Fogarty International Center (FIC), announces the forthcoming issuance of the Request for Applications (RFA) for research training grants in developing research capacity in HIV-associated malignancies in Africa. The NCI plans to fund up to seven awards (maximum of $500,000 in Direct Costs per award) for a project period of three years.  The new RFA is expected to be published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts before the end of July 2009 (It will be RFA-CA-09-016).  This RFA will support project-based research training in HIV-associated malignancies and will use the NIH D43 funding mechanism.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME. However, this Notice is to encourage investigators with appropriate backgrounds and capabilities to pro-actively plan to submit applications in response to the forthcoming RFA.

OVERVIEW OF THE INITIATIVE

This initiative will support innovative programs designed to train African research teams that would be ready to become partners in future international research projects.

The focus of the intended RFA will be on research-training programs providing a variety of short-, medium- and long-term training as well as workshops and online training opportunities.  Each program will be led by investigators from a US-based institution (as application submitting institution) but will have to be developed jointly with appropriate African co-investigators. In this context, it is encouraged that the proposed training programs take advantage of the ongoing collaborations with African investigators.
The overall goal is to strategically develop research capabilities that would enable in the near future hypotheses driven research in HIV-associated malignancies conducted jointly by US and African investigators. The program proposed should be focused and result in development of coordinated research teams that will continue as expert partners in future proposed research studies.  Although such future projects remain beyond the scope of this initiative, it is anticipated that they may attract either Federal funding or support from other funding sources.

Inquiries

Complete information on the training program will be provided in the RFA (RFA-CA-09-016), which is expected to be published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts in the Summer/Fall of 2009.  Prospective applicants are encouraged to check the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts for the Guide Notice of RFA publication.
