The National Institutes of Health (NIH), The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine seeks a Contractor to conduct a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to determine the impact of adjuvant intravenous (IV) magnesium sulfate treatment on hospitalization rates and serial spirometric lung function for patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with severe, acute asthma and do not respond to standard therapy. In a randomly selected sample of the population, baseline and post treatment levels of intracellular magnesium should be assessed as they may be a significant determinant of response.
