Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform potential applicants that the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) will participate in PA-25-306 “NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Project Grant (Parent R21 Clinical Trial Required)" effective for the October 16, 2025 due date and subsequent due dates. 

NIAMS will only accept mechanistic clinical trial studies, which means studies that meet NIH’s definition of a clinical trial AND that are mechanistic in nature, such as those that are designed to understand a behavioral or biological process, the pathophysiology of a disease, or the mechanism of action of an intervention (see NOT-AR-21-009). Applicants are strongly advised to consult with NIAMS program staff prior to submitting an application with human subjects to determine the appropriate funding opportunity.

The following changes and updates have been made to PA-25-306 (shown in bold italics) to reflect NIAMS' participation in this NOFO.
