Issued by

National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS)

Purpose

Effective for application due dates on or after October 12th, 2025, NIAMS will raise the maximum salary and research support provided on NIAMS K99 awards through the Parent notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) or any reissues of this NOFO.

NIAMS K99 award levels will be:

  • Salary Support: Up to $75,000 plus fringe benefits per year (increased appropriate NRSA postdoc stipend levels). As always, salary must be consistent with effort committed to the award and institutional compensation policies.

While NIAMS will support up to $75,000 plus fringe benefits per year, a reminder that K99 recipients are still required to dedicate 100% effort to research. Recipient institutions can further supplement the stipends beyond the $75,000 as long as no additional effort is required.

Example Scenario:

  • Institutional base salary = $125,000
  • NIH/NIAMS contribution = $75,000
  • Institutional supplementation: $50,000

Applicants and recipients are encouraged to consult each NOFO and contact appropriate IC staff contact to determine the salary and research support cost levels for their applications or awards. If you have questions, contact the Grants Management Specialist (GMS) listed in the contacts for your award.

Stipends for current K99 recipients and applicants (applications submitted to submission due dates prior to October 12th) will follow current NRSA stipend levels and subsequent yearly adjustments.
