Issued by

National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS)

Purpose

Background

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) supports research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases; the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research; and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases. NIAMS is updating its Strategic Plan to help guide the research it supports over the next 5 years. The new Plan will focus on cross-cutting thematic research opportunities where the Institute can be best positioned to make a difference in the lives of all Americans. Public input on these cross-cutting themes and on bold aspirations that the research community is poised to accomplish is a crucial initial step in this effort. NIAMS staff, leadership, and Advisory Council members will review and consider input received in response to this RFI as the Institute moves forward to develop its Strategic Plan.

Information Requested

Through this RFI, NIAMS invites feedback from researchers in academia and industry, health care professionals, patient advocates and health advocacy organizations, scientific or professional organizations, Federal agencies, and other interested members of the public. Professional societies and patient organizations are strongly encouraged to submit a single response that reflects the views of their membership as a whole.

Please provide your perspective on the following issues:

  • Cross-cutting thematic research opportunities that the Institute should commit to addressing in fiscal years 2025-2029. Please include the anticipated impacts on scientific knowledge, the research community, or human health in your response.
  • Bold aspirations that NIAMS-supported research could accomplish over the next half-decade.
