National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS)
NIAMS will extend eligibility for submission of K99/R00 applications due to COVID related disruptions. Under normal circumstances, individuals must have no more than 48 months of cumulative postdoctoral research experience (i.e., all research experience subsequent to completion of the doctorate) to be eligible to apply for an NIAMS K99/R00.
NIAMS understands that COVID-19 has caused a major disruption in the ability of many individuals to make progress during their post-doctoral research. Though subject to future updates, NIAMS now will provide a 2-receipt cycle extension of eligibility for individuals who were in post-doctoral training during the COVID public health emergency. This eligibility extension applies to AIDS and non-AIDS applications.
Applicants can combine eligibility extensions up to a total of 1 year of extended time.
Example 1: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual can apply for the K99/R00 is February/March 2022. This individual will now be eligible to apply for the K99/R00 up through the October/November 2022 due dates.
Example 2: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual can apply for the K99/R00 is June/July 2022. This individual will now be eligible to apply for the K99/R00 up through the February/March 2023 due dates.
Example 3: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual could apply for the K99/R00 was February/March 2021. This individual is no longer eligiblefor the K99/R00.
Example 4: An individual who has already been granted a 1-year extension for childbirth is not eligible for an additional COVID extension.
Applicants are encouraged to contact NIAMS staff prior to submitting their application to confirm that their eligibility extension will be granted.
