PAR-19-371 - NIAID Career Transition Award (K22 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
Under normal circumstances, individuals must have no more than 5 years of cumulative postdoctoral research experience (i.e., all research experience subsequent to completion of the doctorate) on the relevant due date to be eligible to apply for the NIAID K22 Career Transition Award to Promote Award.
NIAID understands that COVID-19 has caused a major disruption in the ability of many individuals to make progress on their research. Though subject to future updates, NIAID now will provide at least a 2-receipt cycle extension (roughly 8 additional months) of eligibility for individuals whose eligibility to apply for the K22, under normal eligibility rules (including the resubmission policy as defined in NOT-OD-18-197), is expiring between June/July 2020 and February/March 2021 (inclusive of these dates). In addition, those who normally would have been eligible to apply for the June/July 2021 receipt date will have a 1-receipt cycle (roughly 4 months) extension.
Example 1: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual can apply for the K22 is June/July 12, 2020. This individual will now be eligible to apply for the K22 in June/July 2020, October/November 2020 or February/March 2021.
Example 2: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual can apply for the K99/R00 is February/March 12, 2021. This individual will now be eligible to apply for the K22 up through the October/November 2021 due dates.
Example 3: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual can apply for the K22 is June/July 12, 2021. This individual will now be eligible to apply for the K22 up through the October/November 2021 due dates.
Example 4: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual could apply for the K22 was February/March 12, 2020. This individual is no longer eligible for the K22.
Example 5: An individual applied for the K22 at the February/March 2020 due date and, under the normal eligibility rules, was still within the eligibility window at the June/July 2020 due date. Because the review of this applicant’s initial submission was not completed in time for the applicant to resubmit at the June/July 2020 due date, this individual does not receive an extension of eligibility and is no longer eligible to apply for the K22.
