National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) (http://www.niaid.nih.gov)
Purpose
The purpose of this Notice is to inform the community of two Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) of similar overall scientific scope but with different approaches;
Consortia for AIDS Vaccine Research in Nonhuman Primates (P01) RFA-AI-10-004 invites Program Project applications to establish a collaborative, multidisciplinary research program to investigate viral and host events that occur at the earliest stages of mucosal infection of nonhuman primates (NHP) with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), primarily but not exclusively in cervico-vaginal models of SIV infection of macaques, and to identify vaccines and vaccine-induced immune responses that can block initial infection, prevent establishment of systemic infection, or significantly reduce pathogenic effects of SIV infection.
Mechanisms and Prevention of Sexual Transmission of HIV/SIV (R01) RFA-AI-10-001, is soliciting applications using the NIH Research Project (R01) mechanism. This FOA invites Research Project applications to enhance the understanding of early events in mucosal transmission of HIV/SIV leading to the discovery of novel mechanism(s) of virus transmission, host cell-virus interaction and to advance new concepts for HIV prevention strategies/approaches focused on the development of new conventional or outside-the-box approaches to vaccines and non-vaccine biomedical prevention strategies for optimizing mucosal protection against HIV/SIV.
Applicants are urged to apply to one or the other FOA, but not both.
All other aspects of these FOAs remain unchanged.
