The following text includes an introductory statement and a prioritized list of NIAID-wide interests that we seek to have added to the FOAs under:

Section I. Funding Opportunity Description – Research Objectives, Examples of research topics:

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is interested in supporting projects implementing nanoscience and nanotechnology to address the following priorities

  • Nanotechnology-based delivery systems for:
    • Chemo-immuno-therapeutics and prevention approaches including vaccines and topical microbicides
    • Disease-specific targeting
  • Tools and approaches to understand viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogenesis and host cellular immune response to allergens and/or infecting pathogens.
  • Bio-imaging applications for disease and treatment evaluation
  • Rapid and cost effective platforms forearly and establisheddiseasepathogen detection, resistance evaluation, host response biomarker evaluation, and genetic testing
  • Interrogation of the safety of current and proposed nanotechnology platforms and strategies
