AMENDMENT TO RFA-AI-02-031: REGIONAL CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE FOR BIODEFENSE AND EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASES RESEARCH (RCE) Release Date: September 17, 2002 NOTICE: NOT-AI-02-051 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) (http://www.niaid.nih.gov) The purpose is to clarify certain aspects of RFA AI-02-031 which was published in the NIH Guide August 2, 2002,: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AI-02-031.html All other aspects of the RFA remain unchanged. o Into the section FUNDS AVAILABLE insert, after the first sentence, the following statement: "Given the total funds available for the program, it is anticipated that awards will be made in the general range of $4-6 million, direct costs, per year." o In several places the RFA refers to the CDC Category A-C list of agents. These statements should, instead, refer to the NIAID Category A, B & C Priority Pathogens list which may be found at: http://www2.niaid.nih.gov/Biodefense/bandc_priority.htm o Into the section ELIGIBLE INSTITUTIONS insert the following statement: "An application may be submitted from a consortium that includes participants from more than one region." o Into the section ELIGIBLE INSTITUTIONS insert the following statement: "Applications will not be accepted from institutions that are submitting applications to the Planning Grants for Regional Centers of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research (P-RCE) program (AI-02- 050)." o From the section INDIVIDUALS ELIGIBLE TO BECOME PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS delete the following statement: "Principal Investigators must be United States citizens. All investigators in RCE activities who handle CDC Category A Agents must be United States citizens." Potential applicants are advised to consult the CDC and NIAID websites for guidance about select agents and issues related to the Patriot Act.
