CIPRA will support comprehensive research and development efforts in eligible nations to develop practical, affordable and acceptable methods to both prevent and treat HIV/AIDS in adults and children. The goals of CIPRA are to: 1. Provide long-term support for planning and implementing a comprehensive HIV/AIDS research agenda including, epidemiological, clinical and laboratory research on HIV/AIDS. Such research should form the basis for the development and application of practical and affordable methods to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS in the host country(ies). 2. Enhance the capability and capacity of the applicant organization to conduct the research agenda that is relevant to the affected population(s). Provide support for continual training of project staff at all levels, so that the organization can develop and maintain skilled staff. Provide support for infrastructure (facilities, renovations, and equipment) and the organizational capability necessary to develop and sustain an ongoing research effort. ELIGIBILITY. Applications must come from research or clinical care organizations located in resource-constrained countries (i.e. countries with per capita gross national product less than US $5,000). Potential applicants can determine eligibility by country using the following table that summarizes economic information and HIV data by country: http://www.worldbank.org/aids-econ/confront/appendix/apdxtbl2a.htm Collaboration with investigators from the U.S. and other international organizations is encouraged, but is not required.
