POLICY ON SUPPORT OF LARGE-SCALE GENOME SEQUENCING PROJECTS – ADDENDUM FOR
POTENTIAL BIOTERRORISM AGENTS

Release Date: March 7, 2000

NOTICE: AI-00-004

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency

On September 27, 1999, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases (NIAID) announced a new policy on support of genome sequencing
projects; see
https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not99-148.html.
Detailed information on the NIAID genome sequencing program
can be found at http://www.niaid.nih.gov/dmid/genomes/.

This addendum announces an opportunity for support of large-scale
projects for sequencing of high priority pathogens as potential agents
for bioterrorism. Except for the addition of these priority pathogens
and an added receipt date for applications, all provisions of policy
notice of September 27, 1999 are still applicable.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) with
funds provided by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
will accept and consider for funding, under the conditions presented
below, research applications for large-scale genome sequencing of
microbial pathogens that have the potential to be used as agents of
bioterrorism.

1. PRIORITY BIOTERRORISM AGENTS. The priority organisms covered by this
addendum are listed at:
http://www.niaid.nih.gov/dmid/genomes/priorities.htm.

2. ADDED APPLICATION RECEIPT DATE. Applications for sequencing of
priority bioterrorism pathogens must be submitted for the receipt on
April 18, 2000 to enable funding by September 2000.
