Section I. Funding Opportunity Description
The mission of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) is to support and conduct biological, clinical, behavioral, social, and economic research on aging; foster the development of research and clinician scientists in aging; provide research resources to facilitate innovative aging research; and disseminate information about aging and advances in research to the public, health care professionals, and the scientific community, among a variety of audiences. NIA promotes strategies to build global aging research capacity and supports collaborative research between U.S. scientists and those in other countries, to influence the development of biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social research internationally related to aging. NIA also supports the career development of early-stage investigators to help them establish research programs that will prepare them to assume leadership roles in their field of expertise, poised to influence theory, practice, and health outcomes related to the health of older individuals.
NIA is pursuing this initiative to encourage the development of training and research programs related to aging, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD) in low- and middle-income countries, globally. Scientific programs of interest include, but are not limited to, studies that investigate neural and behavioral processes associated with a normally aging brain; basic, clinical, and epidemiological (genetic and environmental) studies of dementias, including Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias; studies of improved immunity during aging; and behavioral and social research on life-course health, aging, and AD/ADRD using NIA-supported internationally comparable studies or the development of similarly comparable studies in low- and middle-income countries.
Studies that draw data from across the lifespan are especially encouraged and applicants are expected to factor sex as a biological variable into research designs, analyses, and reporting in vertebrate animal and human studies. Research programs that include vulnerable or under-researched LMIC populations (e.g. women, or indigenous populations) are also encouraged. Applicants should review the Strategic Directions for Research, 2020 – 2025. Applications whose research focuses on Alzheimer’s disease should also review the AD/ADRD Research milestones for more information on research priorities.
