Purpose

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has long provided biological resources to the research community to facilitate research on the biology of aging. In this role, it maintains colonies of barrier-raised, Specific Pathogen-Free (SPF) rodents specifically for use in aging research, under contractual arrangement with commercial vendors, including male and female rats (inbred F344 and Brown Norway; hybrid F344xBN F1) and male and female mice (inbred BALB/cBy and C57BL/6; hybrid CB6F1).

The NIA aged rodents resource also includes a colony of male caloric restricted (CR) C57BL/6 mice. Due to its limited use, the NIA CR colony is being sunsetted and is expected to close at the end of the 2020 calendar year.
