Purpose
The purpose of this Notice is to inform potential applicants that the National Institute on Aging (NIA) will participate, effective immediately, in the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) PAR-18-881, "Short-term Mentored Career Enhancement Awards in Mobile and Wireless Health Technology and Data Analytics: Cross-training at the Intersection of Behavioral and Social Sciences and STEM Disciplines (K18 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)".

NIA encourages submission of applications fitting this FOA that are related to Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease related dementias (AD/ADRD), including age related cognitive impairment. The field has until recently, included limited work in mobile and wireless technology, but this is changing rapidly. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review recommendations from the most recent Alzheimer’s Summit, such as:
- Develop and deploy citizen science methods to engage diverse and under-represented populations including the full spectrum of age, race/ethnicity, and technological sophistication/access in optimizing approaches to disease monitoring and data sharing.
- Develop and disseminate new pervasive computing assessment methods that can be embedded in existing and new clinical research studies.
- Provide support to existing and new clinical research studies for data storage, data curation, and data management to enable rapid and broad, high-fidelity data sharing
- Develop criteria and methods for screening, testing, and validating new technologies for disease monitoring.
- Develop new technologies (mobile and wireless) that enhance the dementia assessment, care, management and delivery of clinical care, caregiver support, and in-home monitoring.
- Integrate mobile health (mHealth) technologies used for disease monitoring and assessment with the formal health care system and conduct clinical trials of mHealth technologies that rely on lay workers (rather than patients or families) to collect data in community settings and transmit these data to the formal health care system.
- Conduct research (pilot studies) designed to test the use of technology to overcome the workforce limitations in the care of older adults with dementia as well as in providing caregiver support and education.
