Purpose

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has supported a colony of caloric-restricted (CR) rodents for use by NIA grantees for nearly 20 years. Use of the NIA CR rodents has dwindled over the past several years, as the needs of investigators studying the biology of aging have changed. Because of the expense of this colony and the limited use, the NIA has decided not to renew the CR rodent contract after the current contract expires. As a result, entries into the current CR aging colony will terminate in the summer of 2018, with older mice available until around the summer of 2020. This change does not affect the aging mouse colony or the aging rat colony, just the caloric restricted rodent colony.

The NIA might be able to make special provisions for NIA grantees with grants that include specific aims directly focused on CR mice. Investigators with newly funded NIA grants that have specific aims requiring CR mice should contact Dr. Nancy Nadon. Further updates will be provided in later Notices and on the NIA aged rodent colony handbook website, http://www.nia.nih.gov/research/dab/aged-rodent-colonies-handbook.
