The purpose of this Notice is to inform the research community of the report from the July 11-12 and November 20-21, 2006 National Institute on Aging meetings of an Advisory Panel on New Interventions for Menopausal Symptoms. Background: The National Institute on Aging in collaboration with other NIH institutes, centers and offices convened the New Interventions for Menopausal Symptoms Advisory Panel on July 11-12 and November 20-21, 2006. The objective of these meetings was to develop recommendations regarding the next steps to be undertaken by the NIH to address priorities and new research opportunities targeted by the expert panel of the March 21-23, 2005 NIH State-of-the-Science (SoS) Conference on Management of Menopause-Related Symptoms. This meeting report reviews the key menopause-related symptoms targeted by the 2006 NIA Advisory Panel and its recommendations for further research on 1) the etiology and characteristics of menopausal symptoms, as well as 2) promising new strategies for managing these symptoms.
This notice provides additional background information relevant to a Funding Opportunity Announcement (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AG-08-004.html) that was issued on July 18, 2007 by the NIA, NICHD, NCCAM and ORWH. This FOA, RFA-AG-08-004, seeks applications to establish a Menopausal Symptoms Clinical Research Network to facilitate clinical intervention studies targeting bothersome vasomotor symptoms and related sleep disturbance, mood disorders and vaginal dryness in a collaborative, multidisciplinary, multicenter setting.
