National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for an R34 Clinical Trial Optional mechanism focusing on alcohol health services. This FOA will broadly focus on closing the treatment gap for individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD); within this focus, there are five major areas of emphasis: (1) increasing access to treatment for AUD, (2) making treatment for AUD more appealing, (3) examining cost structures and insurance systems, (4) conducting studies on dissemination and implementation of existing evidence-based approaches to treating AUD, and (5) reducing health disparities as a means of addressing the treatment gap in AUD for health disparity populations.
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.
The FOA is expected to be published in Spring 2022 with an expected application due date in Summer 2022.
This FOA will utilize the R34 Clinical Trial Optional activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.
This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into the area of health services for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.
This FOA will emphasize five main areas in alcohol health services research. These five areas include accessibility, increased treatment appeal, costs, dissemination and implementation, and health disparities. Other areas of priority include but are not limited to: use of technology to reduce the treatment gap for individuals with AUD; alcohol health services research in novel settings or with novel populations across the lifespan; consideration of individual-level barriers to accessing treatment for AUD, e.g., stigma; emphasis on individuals with AUD and comorbid psychiatric disorders (including but not limited to other substance use disorders); and study designs extending beyond standard randomized clinical trials, e.g., effectiveness-implementation hybrid, Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial (SMART), and multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) studies.
