Purpose

This Notice informs potential applicants that the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is participating, effective immediately, in PAR-21-144 "Research on Biopsychosocial Factors of Social Connectedness and Isolation on Health, Wellbeing, Illness, and Recovery (R01 Basic Experimental Studies with Humans Required)”.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is the lead Federal agency for research on alcohol and health and the largest funder of alcohol research in the world. NIAAA’s mission is to generate and disseminate fundamental knowledge about the effects of alcohol on health and well-being, and apply that knowledge to improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of alcohol-related problems, including alcohol use disorder (AUD), across the lifespan. Specific to this FOA, NIAAA is interested in studies on the impact of social connection and/or isolation across the lifespan, including but not limited to:

• Underlying behavioral, cultural, neurobiological mechanisms of social connection and isolation leading to alcohol use, addiction, or cessation of consumption
• Effects of social connection and isolation on alcohol withdrawal and relapse
• Social media use settings, including use of non-English language social media, that facilitate social connection or isolation and subsequent impact on other behavioral and affective disorders associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD)
