Research Objectives

The following information has been added:

Specific to NIAAA: Alcohol consumption is a known risk factor for many chronic conditions. Alcohol consumption also interacts with other risk and protective factors such as smoking, concurrent/simultaneous use of other drugs, mental health status, body mass index, physical activity, and diet. Our understanding of the causal and the dose-response relationships between alcohol consumption over the life course and chronic conditions can be improved by rigorous research that is based on longitudinal designs. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) encourages such studies. In particular, NIAAA encourages epidemiological studies which take into account healthy drinker effects, survivor bias, effect modification, and confounding as well as prevention studies of innovative and integrative interventions, especially those which have low barriers to implementation and which can achieve sustained effects, in the general population as well as among racial/ethnic minority and health disparities groups.
