COMPETITIVE EXTENSION OF COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT ON THE GENETICS OF ALCOHOLISM, AND
AVAILABILITY OF DATA, CELL LINES, AND DNA FROM THIS PROJECT TO THE BROADER
RESEARCH COMMUNITY
Release Date: May 15, 1998
P.T.
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
PURPOSE
The purpose of this notice is to inform the scientific community that a limited
number of institutions are being asked to submit applications to recruit
additional biological relatives of subjects already enrolled in NIAAA"s
Cooperative Agreement on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA), and to continue
longitudinal tracking of these individuals/families for the purpose of assessing
changes in diagnoses. Eligibility is limited to current participants within the
Cooperative Agreement on the Genetics of Alcoholism, because of their unique
access to the research subjects recruited within the first 10 years of this
study. Continued monitoring of subjects in the COGA sample is essential for
validation and extension of findings, since newly incident cases of alcoholism
can significantly affect the results of linkage analyses. In addition,
prospective observation of adolescent subjects bearing presumed predisposing
genotypes, as they traverse the period of risk for development of alcoholism,
provides a further crucial test of the predictive value of COGA’s linkage
findings. Since only investigators with access to subjects already enrolled in
the study are able to undertake longitudinal follow-up of these subjects,
competition under this Letter of Invitation is being limited to these
investigators.
Data, DNA, and cell lines generated by COGA prior to September 1, 1999 will be
available on September 1, 1999 to all investigators for further studies.
Currently, access to data, DNA, and cell lines generated by COGA are available
to investigators for protocols which do not directly duplicate studies already
ongoing within the COGA project.
