MEDICAL REHABILITATION RESEARCH NETWORKS: WORKSHOPS FOR POTENTIAL APPLICANTS

Release Date: May 26, 1999

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development

The National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR) in the
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) has issued an
RFA for Medical Rehabilitation Research Networks. The full text of the RFA
can be found at http://www.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-HD-99-006.html.

The mechanism chosen for funding the networks is the National Institutes of
Health (NIH) resource-related research project grant (R24). It is hoped that
this mechanism will foster sharing of facilities and collaboration among
disciplines, and generate individual research project grants in medical
rehabilitation. To provide a wide distribution of facilities and resources
devoted to research relevant to medical rehabilitation, NCMRR seeks
applications from institutions located in four areas of the United States: the
Northeast, South, Midwest and West. State distributions are as follows:

Northeast: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode
Island, Vermont.

South: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana,
North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia.

Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri,
Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin.

West: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada,
New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming

To familiarize the research community with this mechanism and with the goals
of the Medical Rehabilitation Research Networks, NCMRR has scheduled
informational workshops for potential applicants. At each, NICHD staff will
present the background of the RFA, and will provide information and answer
questions relevant to applications responding to this RFA. Pre-registration
is optional (contact staff listed below under INQUIRIES), and attendance is
not required for submission of an application. There are no registration fees
associated with the workshops. Travel will be at the expense of attendees.
Workshop summaries, including frequently asked questions, will be available
for those investigators unable to attend. This material will be available
through the contacts listed under INQUIRES or on the Internet at:
http://www.nichd.nih.gov/ncmrr/workshop.htm. Investigators are encouraged to
share information and meeting materials with colleagues.

The workshops will take place in July, allowing investigators time to consider
the logistics of a network application prior to submission of a letter of
intent (November 15, 1999) or an application (January 12, 2000). Morning
(8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. local time) and afternoon (1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. local
time) sessions are planned for each venue to allow attendees some flexibility
in travel schedules.
