INFORMATIONAL MEETING FOR POTENTIAL APPLICANTS TO THE EARLY DETECTION RESEARCH NETWORK Release Date: April 20, 1999 P.T. National Cancer Institute A pre-application informational meeting for those investigators considering submitting applications in response to three RFAs related to the Early Detection Research Network (EDRN) will be held on Monday, May 17, 1999 from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the Natcher Conference Center, Room E1 and E2. Representatives from the NCI's Cancer Biomarkers Research Group, Grants Administration Branch and Special Review, Referral and Resources Branch will be available to provide information and to answer questions relevant to applications responding to this RFA. Transcripts will be available upon request for investigators who are unable to attend. The meeting will focus on three components of the EDRN: (1) Clinical and Epidemiologic Centers (RFA CA 99-007) (2) Biomarkers Validation Laboratories (RFA CA-99-008) (3) Data Management and Coordinating Center (RFA CA-99-011) The complete text of each RFA is available in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts at the following URL: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html The purpose of the EDRN is to establish a scientific consortium of investigators, academic as well as industrial, with resources for basic, translational, and clinical research. The EDRN will have four components -- Biomarkers Developmental Laboratories (for which an informational meeting already has been held), Biomarkers Validation Laboratories, Clinical/Epidemiologic Centers and the Data Management and Coordinating Center. The Biomarkers Developmental Laboratories will have responsibility for the development and characterization of new or refinement of existing biomarkers; the Biomarkers Validation Laboratories will serve as a Network resource for clinical and laboratory validation of biomarkers, which include technological development and refinement; and the Clinical/Epidemiology Centers will conduct clinical and epidemiological research regarding the clinical application of biomarkers. The Data Management and Coordinating Center will be responsible for coordinating the EDRN research activities, providing logistic supports for the meetings, and conducting statistical and computational research. INQUIRIES Investigators who plan to attend should contact the NCI staff member listed below by May 10, 1999 to confirm their attendance and to obtain further information.
