CLARIFICATION AND AMENDMENT

Release Date: December 15, 1998

RFA: MH-99-002

P.T.

National Institute of Mental Health

Letter of Intent Receipt Date: January 11, 1999
Application Receipt Date: February 11, 1999

The purpose of this notice is to revise and clarify RFA MH-98-002, which was
published in the NIH Guide November 20, 1998.

Note that under "MECHANISM OF SUPPORT" there is a paragraph dealing with the
Independent Scientist Award (K02). The statement "A mentor is required" should
read "A mentor is not required".

To further clarify, for cases in which the K02 mechanism will be used to "retool"
and broaden one's research expertise, a mentor is not required. In these cases,
appropriate expertise in the form of collaborator(s) or consultant(s) would
suffice.

For purposes of this RFA, however, in circumstances where an independent, funded
investigator has no experience in child and adolescent mental disorders research,
it is essential that the application outline a period of supervised research. In
the latter case, the applicant may, if strongly justified, request up to an
additional $25,000 per year to defray the cost of research (e.g., supplies,
travel, and other expenses). It should be noted that the allowance for research
costs applies to this RFA only. In addition, a supporting statement from the
research supervisor must be provided in the application.

Prospective applicants should follow the provisions of program announcement PA-
95-050, Independent Scientist Award when preparing an application. It is located
at: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-95-050.html.
