The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)

plans to conduct a study that will recruit two groups of infants <7

days of age: infants who have developed invasive GBS (Type Ia, Ib,

II and III) disease ("cases"), and infants who have not developed

early onset GBS despite being born to GBS-colonized mothers

("controls"). GBS disease will be defined as an infection associated

with isolation of GBS from normally sterile sites, such as

cerebrospinal fluid and blood. A total of 240 cases and 960 controls

will be recruited from participating hospitals over a period of two

years. Cases will be identified by active laboratory-based

surveillance, and controls will be identified through a systematic

culturing of about five percent of parturient mothers in the

participating hospitals. To be eligible, both cases and controls

must be singleton births of at least 34 weeks' gestation, born to

mothers who have not received antibiotic treatment during pregnancy.

This Request for Proposals (RFP) for the detection of GBS is a new

acquisition. The release of the RFP will be on or about March 1, 1994

and proposals will be due 60 days thereafter.

includes only the Statement of Work and Evaluation Criteria to be
