RELEASE DATE: May 23, 2003

NOTICE: NOT-CA-03-030

National Cancer Institute (NCI)

The Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) of the
National Cancer Institute (NCI) announces a revision to NOT-CA-02-026
for applications originally submitted under PAS-02-009, Cohort Studies
in Cancer Epidemiology (NIH Guide October 11, 2001). Revisions of
applications originally submitted on either February 21, 2002, or
February 21, 2003, may be submitted as revised applications for
November 1, 2003. NEW applications may be submitted for October 1,
2003. These dates coincide with the standard receipt dates for NIH
research grant applications.

The Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) of the
National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced an annual receipt date for
R01 applications from investigators intending to initiate,
competitively supplement, or competitively renew epidemiologic cohort
studies of human cancers. It subsequently announced that revised
applications only would be accepted on November 1, 2003. This notice
clarifies and revises the policy described in PAS-02-009, and published
in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts on October 11, 2001. This
revised announcement allows applicants to submit NEW applications on
October 1, 2003, and REVISED applications on November 1, 2003. In
order to be considered as a REVISED application for PAS-02-009, the
application must have already been reviewed under one of the previous
receipt dates for PAS-02-009. An applicant planning to submit for one
of these additional receipt dates should adhere to the procedures and
policies outlined in the original PAS and available at the following
URL address: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAS-02-009.html.

Prospective applicants submitting new applications for the October 1,
2003 receipt date are strongly encouraged to submit a Letter of Intent
by September 1, 2003. Prospective applicants submitting revised
applications for the November 1, 2003, receipt date are strongly
encouraged to submit a Letter of Intent by October 1, 2003. A Letter
of Intent should include the name, address, and telephone number of the
Principal Investigator, the identities of other key personnel and
participating institutions, and that the application is being submitted
in response to PAS-02-009, Cohort Studies in Cancer Epidemiology.
Although a Letter of Intent is not required, is not binding, and does
not enter into the review of a subsequent application, the information
that it contains allows NIH staff to estimate the potential review
workload and plan for the application.

The Letter of Intent, as well as requests for further information,
should be sent to:
