Background

The John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC) intends to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to reissue PAR-08-113. This FOA will encourage applications for the Brain Disorders in the Developing World: Research across the Lifespan (R21).

This notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive proposals. This FOA is expected to be published in fall of 2010 with an anticipated receipt date in early winter 2011. The FOA will utilize the NIH Research Projects (R01) grant mechanism. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Purpose

The Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will encourage exploratory/developmental planning grant applications proposing the development of innovative, collaborative research and research training projects, between high income country (HIC) and low- to middle-income country (LMIC) scientists, on brain and other nervous system function and disorders throughout life, relevant to LMICs. The planning grants are expected to lead to full research programs which contribute to the long-term goals of building sustainable research capacity in LMICs to address nervous system development, function and impairment throughout life and leading to diagnostics, prevention, and treatment strategies that are applicable worldwide.

Registration Requirements

We encourage potential applicants, who have not previously registered with and submitted a grant application to NIH, to start the registration processes as soon as possible, even before FOA publication, since it can take up to 8 weeks to be fully registered. These registrations need to be done only one time and the applicant organization is then set for all future application submissions to NIH through http://www.grants.gov.

Note that to do business with the NIH, applicants and their institutions MUST register with BOTH Grants.gov (http://www.grants.gov ) and the NIH eRA Commons https://commons.era.nih.gov/commons. For questions regarding electronic submission please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) (http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/faq.htm).
