Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to announce the Transformative Health Disparities Research Community Listening Sessions Series to help inform a coordinated program of health disparities and health equity research supported through the NIH Common Fund.

In America, health disparities remain a persistent issue affecting racial/ethnic minority populations and other groups. These individuals have higher rates of certain diseases and death than the general population, despite scientific and technological discoveries that have improved the health of the U.S. population overall. The science of health disparities continues to advance; however, enhanced engagement of communities affected by health disparities and health inequity would facilitate evidence-based research and its dissemination and implementation into practice.

To catalyze transformation in how communities are engaged in research to address health disparities and advance health equity, the NIH Common Fund is developing a new program planned to launch in the Fiscal Year 2023. This program may involve multiple initiatives through which awardees work together on collective goals achieved within ten years. These efforts align with other NIH efforts to end structural racism and stimulate health equity research.

Listening Session Details

Through a series of facilitated listening sessions with the community, the NIH Common Fund’s Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity working group seeks your input on new, innovative research into health disparities, minority health, and health equity. Specifically, we are interested in hearing ideas for interventions to address health disparities and advance health equity and innovative approaches to this type of research in which community members are actively engaged in the research process.

The listening sessions series will bring together members from various stakeholder groups. Community-based organizations, tribal communities, faith-based organizations, advocacy organizations, professional societies, foundations, colleges, and universities will help identify new solutions and inform the development of interventions to address health disparities and advance health equity.

The NIH Common Fund’s Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity Initiative working group will host the series. Please visit the website to learn more about the listening sessions. Click here to register for the following listening session(s):
