Purpose
The National Institutes of Health, Office of Strategic Coordination intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for Demonstration Projects for Pragmatic Clinical Trials focusing on the management of multiple chronic conditions, to be conducted as part of the NIH Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory. See https://commonfund.nih.gov/hcscollaboratory/index.aspx and https://www.nihcollaboratory.org/Pages/default.aspx
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.
The FOA is expected to be published in the Summer of 2013, with an expected application due date in Fall 2013.
This FOA will utilize the UH2/UH3 activity code. Details of the planned Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) are provided below.
This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into conducting clinical research in partnership with multiple integrated health care delivery organizations, particularly those with expertise in the management of patients with multiple chronic conditions, to consider applying for this new FOA.
In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in prevention, diagnosis, treatment or management of patients with multiple chronic conditions, pragmatic trial design, implementation and analysis, and data management will be encouraged and these investigators should consider applying for this application.
Pragmatic trials are “primarily designed to determine the effects of an intervention under the usual conditions in which it will be applied,” which is in contrast with explanatory trials that “are primarily designed to determine the effects of an intervention under ideal circumstances” (http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/content/full/180/10/E47). Demonstration Projects must address a question important for the management of multiple chronic health conditions. For this FOA, common chronic health conditions include diseases, chronic symptoms (e.g., chronic pain) as well as chronic functional impairment (e.g., disability). Applicants are strongly encouraged to develop projects that focus on prevention, diagnosis, treatment or management of patients with multiple chronic medical conditions and one that engages partnership with multiple health care systems.
APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
