The purpose of this notice is to inform potential applicants for an NIH Nanomedicine Development Center (NDC) that an informational meeting will be held to describe the NIH Roadmap Nanomedicine Initiative. It is anticipated that an NIH Roadmap Request for Applications (RFA-RM-06-007) for NDC awards will be published in the NIH guide prior to the meeting.

  • Date: Friday, January 27, 2006
  • Time: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM EST

The meeting will be broadcast live on the internet at http://videocast.nih.gov/default.asp . Questions before or during the meeting broadcast may be submitted to by email to Nanomed@nih.gov. Include Nanomed Info in the subject line.

The NIH Roadmap Nanomedicine Initiative has established a collaborative network of Nanomedicine Development Centers (NDC). After a two-year planning process, four NDCs were awarded for five years beginning in 2005 (see http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/nanomedicine/fundedresearch.asp). This year, additional centers will be awarded to complete the network of NDCs. The RFA will be an open competition, and all qualified applicants who are interested in assembling and leading a multidisciplinary team are invited to attend this meeting and apply for an NDC award.

Nanomedicine is an emerging field that is expected to reap tremendous benefits for human health. Each of these multidisciplinary centers will consist of outstanding investigators from a variety of disciplines including biologists, engineers, mathematicians, physical scientists and clinicians who will develop innovative studies to measure the physical properties of molecules and supramolecular complexes within living cells. The information obtained will be used to understand the design principles of molecular assemblies and complexes which operate at the nanoscale in cells. The long-term goal of the NIH Nanomedicine initiative is to engineer new complexes or nanoscale molecular components that will lead to highly specific treatments to cure disease and/or repair damaged tissue to improve human health.

Details of the NIH Nanomedicine program, the RFA, review of the applications, and the award management will be discussed at the meeting.
