Notice of Limited Competition Request for Applications: Nanomedicine Development Centers

Notice Number: NOT-RM-05-010

Key Dates
Release Date: April 13, 2005

Issued by
National Eye Institute (NEI), (http://www.nei.nih.gov)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is requesting applications from the current awardees of the Concept Development Award planning grants (PN1) issued in response to RFA-RM-04-018 (see http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/nanomedicine/NOT-RM-05-010.pdf for details). The NIH Nanomedicine Roadmap Initiative will provide support for the formation of a national network of Nanomedicine Development Centers (NDC). These centers will conduct novel, multidisciplinary research focused on issues such as quantitative characterization of the physical and chemical properties of molecules and molecular assemblies in living cells, study of the design principles of assemblies in living cells, and creation of tools and nanoscale components to function in cells for repairing damage and curing disease. The goal of the research will be to speed the development of engineered, highly specific diagnostics and therapeutics.

Background

In 2004, the NIH began a multi-step process of developing Nanomedicine Development Centers by funding 20 six-month PN1 planning awards. PN1 awardees were instructed to assess gaps and barriers in current knowledge, determine model systems for study in order to fill in these gaps and overcome these barriers, evaluate the tools currently available for these measurements, and ascertain what information and tools would be required to achieve progress. The PN1 awardees contacted potential partners, held preliminary meetings and formal workshops, formed strategic working groups, formulated budgets, and selected key personnel to assist in designing potential multidisciplinary NDCs. Each team produced a Concept Development Plan (CDP) which outlined their respective visions for the structure of an individual NDC as well as operation of the network of such centers.

Four representatives of each PN1 awardee team met with NIH staff and outside consultants in a workshop at the NIH on March 10-11, 2005, to discuss the content of the CDPs as well as the overall Nanomedicine program vision, goals ,and directions. This highly interactive meeting continued the year-long development process for this limited competition RFA.

Implementation

The NIH Nanomedicine Initiative project team will contact all current PN1 awardees by email by May 1, 2005, and provide them with information regarding application and evaluation procedures. Written and telephone inquiries concerning this process should be directed to:
