National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
Purpose
This Notice informs Education and Research Centers (ERCs) that NIOSH will consider applications for academic certificate training programs that are in fields that impact worker health and safety. This Notice also clarifies the level of stipend support for occupational medicine residents. Details about these changes are provided in the following sections.
Effective with the publication of this Notice, ERCs and ERC applicants may compete for academic certificate training programs that are outside approved or traditional academic occupational safety and health disciplines.
The proposed certificate program must be recognized as a formal academic program by the applicant institution, with courses and experiences to enhance professionals’ skills, knowledge, and practice in OSH.
Applicants must fully demonstrate the need for the proposed academic certificate program and must describe their capacity to meet the need for that program.
Trainee support for academic certificate programs is limited to tuition and fees, and is included in the minimum 70% allocation toward direct Trainee Costs.
Academic certificate trainees should be clearly identified in academic training program budgets.
The review criteria in PAR-15-303 will be used to peer review and score applications for academic certificate programs.
OMR stipends may be requested above the NIH NRSA guidelines described at http://grants1.nih.gov/training/nrsa.htm, if the applicant institution requires a higher postgraduate year (PGY) level or higher stipend for OMR trainees. These requests must be fully justified and must include documentation of the program requirements.
